Purpose

Improve the quality of life of all the people and the communities involved in the toquilla straw craftmanship, this will allow us to help support and preserve this ancient tradition while empowering the women in the region.

Program

Content

Education is the solution. IWF Ecuador, with the collaboration of CIDAP, Centro Interamericano de Artes Populares, has developed a program that includes:

  • Personal empowerment and leadership skills.
  • Weaving techniques applied to toquilla Straw fibers.
  • Dyeing techniques for toquilla straw.
  • Design craftmanship and skills, taking into account local and international design trends.
  • Commercialization and marketing of the products.

Shedule 2023

Phase 1:

Census of already existing methods and production of toquilla straw
products in the region.

Phase 2:

Creativity workshops.

Phase 3:

An on site creation of a weaving school for training, motivation and
growth, all under supervision.

Phase 4:

Weaving and color dyeing workshops.

Phase 5:

Development of products for the Craft Fair in Cuenca.
